"Serial Range ED303 - EE202 This aircraft was one of 620 Lancasters ordered from A.V.Roe (Chadderton) in 1941 and built from Nov42 to Jun43 as 129 Mk.1s and 491 Mk.111s in a mixed production run up to ED782 and all as Mk.111s from ED783 onwards. The Mk.1s were initially fitted with Merlin 20 and the Mk.111s with Merlin 28 engines. ED934 was a Mk.111 Type 464 (Provisioning) Lancaster. Tested 29Apr43 and delivered to 617 Sqdn 3May43. Part of the second wave of Operation Chastise Lost on its first Key Operation with a total of 17 hours. ED934 was one of eight 617 Sqdn Lancasters lost on this operation. Hit by Flak from Flak Batteries on Texel, while flying at 300 feet outbound, and crashed into the Waddenzee W of Harlingen, where F/S McDowell is buried in the General Cemetery. His body was recovered 22Jun43; his comrades have no known graves.
