"Serial Range ED303 - EE202 This aircraft was one of 620 Lancasters ordered from A.V.Roe (Chadderton) in 1941 and built from Nov42 to Jun43 as 129 Mk.1s and 491 Mk.111s in a mixed production run up to ED782 and all as Mk.111s from ED783 onwards. The Mk.1s were initially fitted with Merlin 20 and the Mk.111s with Merlin 28 engines. ED887 was a Mk.1 and a Type 464 (Provisioning) Lancaster and was delivered to 617 Sqdn 17Apr43 Lost on its first Key Operation with a total of 25 hours. ED887 was one of eight 617 Sqdn Lancasters los on this operation. see: ED864; ED865; ED910; ED925; ED927; ED934; ED937 Airborne 2147 16May43 in the First Wave of Operation Chastise and headed for the M_hne Dam and dropped its weapon, as briefed. Set course as Deputy Leader, for the Eder Dam before heading for home. Shot down by Flak while clearing the Dutch coast and crashed 0258 17May43 off Castricum aan Zee. All are buried in Bergen General Cemetery. S/L Young of Pasadena, California, had served with distinction with 102 Sqdn on Whitleys (see: T4216) and later with 104 Sqdn in the Middle East. Details of his awards had been Gazetted 9May41 and 18 Sep42. Sgt Horsfall's brother, Alan, was also killed On Active Service.
