"Serial Range ED303 - EE202 This aircraft was one of 620 Lancasters ordered from A.V.Roe (Chadderton) in 1941 and built from Nov43 to Jun43 as 129 Mk.1s and 491 Mk.111 in a mixed production run up to ED782 and all as Mk.111s from ED783 onwards. Mk.1s were initially fitted with Merlin 20 and Mk.111s with Merlin 28 engines. ED927 was a Mk.111 a Type 464 (Provisioning) Lancaster delivered to 617 Sqdn 3May43. Part of the second wave of operation Chastise. Lost on its first Key Operation with a total of 17 hours. ED927 was one of eight 617 Sqdn Lancasters lost on this operation. See: ED864; ED865; ED887; ED910; ED925; ED934; ED937. Airborne 2128 16May43 from Scampton and headed for the Sorpe Dam. Crashed 2350 after colliding with high tension cables at Haldern, 4 km ENE of Rees. Taken to the Nordfriedhof at D_sseldorf. They have all been subsequently re-interred in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery. All had previously flown with 61 Sqdn; their awards in descending order of crew, being Gazetted 14May43 20Jul45. Sgt Liddell was 18, and must have concealed his true age when he enlisted 30May41. He was the youngest fatality from this operation. The Upkeep weapon from this Lancaster was captured intact from the wreck.
