"Serial range N2840 - N2859. 20 Wellington Mk.1C. Part of a batch of 100 Wellington Mk.1C. N2735-N2784; N2800-N2829; N2840-N2859 delivered by Vickers (Chester) in Jul and August 1940. N2755; N2801; N2856; N2857 converted to Mk.XV1. N2844 was one of two 218 Sqdn Wellingtons lost on this night on two separate operations. See: W5457. Airborne 2348 18Aug41 from Marham. Shot down by a night-fighter (Fw Siegfried Ney, 4./NJG1) and crashed 0206 19Aug41 in the IJsselmeer. Three bodies, those of Sgt Wilson, Sgt Boswell, and P/O Pockney, were recovered and taken for burial in various Dutch cemeteries. The rest have no known graves.
