"Serial Range ED303 - EE202 This aircraft was one of 620 Lancasters ordered from A.V.Roe (Chadderton) in 1941 and built from Nov42 to Jun43 as 129 Mk.1s and 491 Mk.111s in a mixed production run up to ED782 and all as Mk.111s from ED783 onwards. The Mk.1a were initially fitted with Merlin 20 and the Mk.111s with Merlin 28 engines. ED937 was a Mk.111 Type 464 (Provisioning) Lancaster and was delivered to 617 Sqdn ex-39MU 14May43. Part of the first wave in Operation Chastise Lost on its first operation with a total of seven hours. ED937 was one of eight 617 Sqdn Lancasters lost on this operation. Crippled by the detonation of its own weapon and while trying to make base was hit by light Flak, crashing 0236 17May43 at Netterden, 3 km E of Emmerich. all were taken to D_sseldorf for burial in the Nordfriedhof. They have been subsequently re-interred in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery. S/L Maudslay's DFC for service with 44 Sqdn had been Gazetted 30Jan42. The others had flown with 50 Sqdn and in descending order of crew, their awards were Gazetted 19Jun43, 20Jul45 and 29Jun45 respectively.
