"Serial Range ED303 - EE202 This aircraft was one of 620 Lancasters ordered from A.V.Roe (Chadderton) in 1941 and built from Nov42 to Jun43 as 129 mk.1s and 491 Mk.111s, in a mixed production run up to ED782 and all as Mk.111 from ED783 onwards. The Mk.1s were initially with Merlin 20 and the Mk.111s Merlin 28 engines ED925 was a Mk.111 and a Type 464 (Provisioning) Lancaster and was delivered to No.617 Sqdn 1May43. Lost on its first Key Operation with a total of 16 hours. ED925 was one of eight No.617 Sqdn Lancasters lost on this operation. See: ED864; ED865; ED887; ED910; ED927; ED934; ED937. Airborne 2139 16May43 on the first wave of Operation Chastise tasked to bomb the M_hne Dam. Hit by Flak while approaching the target before being crippled by the blast from its own weapon, the 'bouncing' bomb which overshot the dam wall and exploded beyond the parapet. Crashed 0034 17May43 at Ost_nnen, 6 km ESE of Werl. Those killed are buried in Rheinbergen War Cemetery. F/L Hopgood gained his awards for service with 106 Sqdn, details Gazetted 27Oct42 and 12Jan43 respectively. The two DFM holders, P/O Gregory and P/O Burcher had flown with No.44 Sqdn and No.106 Sqdn respectively, their awards Gazetted 22Aug41 and 20Apr43. A Commemorative stone marks the crash site.
